Spine

Spine is how we work. Speed with Integrity.

Our answerable framework.

What it changes

The customer keeps sight, control, and proof.

Engineering usually hands the customer an outcome they cannot inspect. The decisions live in someone's head, the reasoning is gone by the time anyone asks, and the report, if it arrives at all, gets written weeks later from memory.

Spine changes that. It holds engineering context, accountability, reporting, and value verification from decision to outcome, so what we build is always seen, owned, and answerable to the customer.

Traceable

See it.

The record, as the work happens.

Governed

Control it.

A named owner on every change.

Answerable the riser

Prove it.

Ask why, get evidence.

High Impact is work that matters  ·  Built Clean is work that holds.

Why Spine exists

Everything connects.

Without structural continuity, timesheets drift from reality, project summaries require manual assembly, new engineers start from zero, and operational tasks interrupt engineering flow. Spine solves all of this with one framework, and everything connects.

How it works

The architect directs. Spine holds the standard.

Every decision, change, test, and piece of evidence is recorded as the work happens, under review, traceability, and test gating. The architect directs; Spine handles the repeatable work: analysis, implementation, testing, reporting. Nothing ships until it has passed static analysis, unit tests, and test gating under human review. Nothing reaches production without a named human's approval.

01

Rules that always load.

Some knowledge applies every single session: security rules, safety rails, workflow patterns. They load automatically, and every rule exists because something went wrong without it.

02

Knowledge retrieved on demand.

Specialized knowledge, platform patterns, troubleshooting guides, integration discoveries, is stored as lessons learned and retrieved when relevant. Lessons learned exist to prevent re-learning the same lessons.

03

State that bridges sessions.

At the end of each day, what was done, what was decided and what is next is captured. The next morning the work picks up where it left off.

The record compounds: by the sixth month it knows more about an environment's quirks than most people on the team.

The principles

Five principles. Every session.

01

Snoop before assuming.

Inspect real data, never guess. A two-minute inspection saves twenty minutes of wrong-fix cycles.

02

API first, UI never.

Scriptable, repeatable, auditable, automatable. A console click is none of those.

03

Development first.

Nothing reaches production except through the tested migration path.

04

Secrets never enter the record.

Not a script, not an effort report, not a snapshot; enforced before every commit.

05

Everything connects.

Engineering feeds reporting, reporting feeds timekeeping, timekeeping feeds value verification.

The Report

The executive summary, always current.

Spine keeps the record as the work happens: every day of an engagement ends with an effort report, so the summary is never written from memory. Cognita compiles it from those reports and delivers it to you: what shipped, the hours, the phase the work is in, the business value, and what comes next, in plain English. Ask for the current one at any point in the engagement.

Read four pages of one and decide whether it was written in a boardroom or at a keyboard. The answer is both.

1 · Executive summary

Cognita was engaged to take the customer's cloud management platform from a basic tool to a fully automated, enterprise-grade self-service provisioning platform with deep ITSM integration. The engagement delivered:

  • 3 self-service catalogs with intelligent form cascading, automated VLAN routing, and real-time cost estimation
  • 4 custom cost-intelligence reports with executive P&L reporting
  • 45 automated service plans across 3 workload types, with infrastructure-driven pricing that self-heals from drift
  • Bidirectional ServiceNow integration: request creation, approval workflows, resource changes, and automated failure notification
  • A complete DEV→PROD migration suite: one-click promotion of every platform component between environments
  • Bulk onboarding of unmanaged VMs into tagged, plan-assigned managed instances
  • Automated failure monitoring: a failed deployment is detected within 5 minutes and its ticket updated
2 · Project timeline
Phase 1 · Foundation and cost intelligence
Phase 2 · Catalog API and ServiceNow integration
Phase 3 · Pricing architecture and infrastructure automation
Phase 4 · Infrastructure-driven pricing and operational automation
Phase 5 · Executive reporting and universal naming
Phase 6 · Migration suite and brownfield onboarding
Phase 7 · Failure monitoring, networking and production hardening
Phase 8 · Migration suite maturity and production deployment
5 · Business value delivered
  • Cost transparency: accurate cost allocation across 9 P&Ls, 12 portfolios, and 609+ instances; executive-ready reporting
  • Operational efficiency: zero manual intervention from ServiceNow request to running VM; automated failure detection and ticketing
  • Risk reduction: compliance tagging enforced at provisioning; all automation safe to re-run without side effects; a complete audit trail in version control
  • Scalability: a new workload needs only a datastore and a config update; the patterns are ready for multi-cloud
